Sweeping the Tip of the Penis Across the Entrance Works Late in Sex, Not as Foreplay

Bare feet in white surf on a rocky shore

Your partner holds his penis in his hand and sweeps the tip quickly across the opening of your vagina and your inner lips, side to side or up and down, without going in. This is a technique of its own, and the most important thing about it is timing: it works near the top of arousal, not at the start. This article explains what the move is, why that part of the body responds to it, when to use it, and where squirting fits if you want to try.

What the move is

The partner with the penis pulls most of the way out, holds the shaft, and uses the front of the head, just the tip, to skate across the entrance and the inner lips. The contact is fast and light. It is not pushing in and not pressing hard. The head of the penis becomes something he steers by hand, the way fingers would be steered, instead of something that only moves in and out.

It works in any position where he can see and reach the entrance. Kneeling upright between her legs makes it easy (more: When He Kneels Upright, Your Front Wall Gets the Speed While He Does the Driving). It also works from behind: he pulls back and sweeps the tip across her from there.

Why the entrance and inner lips respond

The inner lips are packed with nerve endings and blood vessels. Studies of their tissue describe them as highly vascular folds with many nerve structures, and they fill with blood and swell as a woman gets aroused (Ginger and colleagues 2011; a 2025 review of 27 studies by Perelmuter and colleagues reached the same picture). For many women the first part of the vagina, near the opening, responds more to light touch, and deeper inside is felt more as pressure (more: Feeling Looser Halfway Through Is Your Vagina Opening, Not a Flaw).

The rim just above and around the urethral opening, between the clitoris and the vaginal opening, also swells as arousal builds and becomes much more responsive than it was at the start. The sweep crosses all of these at once: the opening, the inner lips, and that rim. The inner lips also connect up to the hood of the How the clitoris is built, so their movement can pass on to the clitoris too.

So the move is fast, light contact on tissue that has become swollen and sensitive. That is why it depends so much on when you do it.

Late, not early

On a body that is not yet aroused, the sweep is just an odd flicking. The tissue has not filled yet, so there is little there to respond. Near the top of arousal, the same move can feel intense.

Use it only once she is fully aroused. Two common moments:

This makes it a finishing move, like switching to hands late in sex (more: Hands Can Do More as the Finish Than as the Warm-Up). It is not a tease to start with.

Ways to do it

There is no single right way. Several versions all work, and different women like different ones:

  • side to side across the opening;
  • up and down along the inner lips, from the opening toward the clitoris;
  • light and fast, or a little slower and firmer;
  • mostly on the opening, or mostly on the rim around the urethral opening just above it.

A good first thing to try is light and fast, side to side across the opening and inner lips. Then change one thing at a time and keep whatever feels best to her. She can guide it: put her hand on his, hold the shaft herself and steer the tip, or simply say faster, slower, higher, lower.

Use plenty of lube. By this point she is often wet, but the head of the penis skating fast across skin can still drag. If anything drags or stings, add lube or stop.

If you want to try squirting

For some women, this sweep is one of the likelier ways to squirt. Squirting is still not a goal, and nothing is missing if it does not happen. A woman can have a full, strong orgasm and stay dry.

It is uncommon the first times for someone who has never squirted, and it may not happen at all. For a woman whose body has done it before, it tends to come more easily. Both are normal.

If she feels a sudden urge to pee during the sweep, that is the moment the If You Want to Try Squirting, Push Out Instead of Holding In article is about: gently bearing down instead of clenching is the way described there to let it happen, if you want to try and if it is going to. Pee before you start and put a towel down, so letting go is easier. She decides whether to stay with that feeling or stop.

A second route: height and angle

There is a second way this can happen, driven by the angle rather than the hand. When she lies back at the edge of a counter or in a car's front seat, reclined with her knees up and apart, and he kneels or stands at a height where each stroke lands on the front wall, the penis also pulls on the base of the clitoris, the urethral opening and the rim around it. On a body that is already fully aroused, that pulling can bring on squirting too. It is less likely than the sweep. A car seat is often easier than a counter because she can shift her own body to find the angle.

Some couples like the feeling of being somewhere unusual, like a car on a rainy night with the windows fogged. Keep that as a feeling only. The place has to be actually private: locked, nobody around, nobody who could walk up or see in. Sex where someone could really see you is not what this is about.

Keep it hers

  • Ask first, and keep asking. Some women love this sweep; some find it too much or just not interesting. Neither says anything about her body.
  • She can stop it at any point. Soreness, stinging, a real need to pee, or simply not wanting it are all reasons to stop.
  • It is not a scorecard. If squirting becomes his target, the pressure tends to make it less likely and the sex worse.
  • Protection still applies. This is genital contact. If you use condoms, keep one on for this too.

What to take away

Save the sweep for late in sex, once she is fully aroused: after hands, or after penetration has opened her up. Hold the penis and skate the tip light and fast across the opening and inner lips, then let her feel decide the direction, speed and spot. Use lots of lube. If squirting happens, it happens; if the urge to pee comes and she wants to see what follows, bearing down can let it happen, if she wants to try and if it is going to. If nothing happens, or she prefers something else, that is just as normal.
