When He Kneels Upright, Your Front Wall Gets the Speed While He Does the Driving

A couple kissing in bed

When your partner kneels upright between your legs instead of lying on you, and keeps his strokes short, the head of his penis stops sliding past the first few centimeters inside you and starts rubbing along them. That stretch is the front wall of the vagina, and in this position it gets fast, direct contact while he does the driving. This article explains how the angle does that, why you can take more speed this way, the small changes that make it stronger, and the catch: every change that helps you also brings him closer to coming.

What changes when he sits up

Lying flat on you, your partner's strokes tend to run long and deep. The head of the penis passes the first stretch of the vagina on its way in and spends most of each stroke further back.

When he kneels upright with his hips a little lower than yours, the penis points slightly upward. If he keeps the strokes short, the head stays near the opening and presses and drags along the upper side, the front wall, on every pass. This is the stretch a few centimeters inside on the belly side, often called the G-spot area.

That stretch responds for a plain anatomical reason. The front wall, the tissue around the urethra and the inner parts of the clitoris sit close together there, and researchers describe them as one responsive group rather than separate spots (Jannini, 2014). A stroke on the front wall can also press on the nearby inner parts of the clitoris. And as you get aroused, the deep part of the vagina widens while the opening and the front wall stay where they are (how the vagina changes shape), so short strokes keep landing where the feeling is.

You receive, he drives

What makes this position different is who does the work. When you are on top, you set the rhythm and carry the effort: you balance, you move your hips, and when your thighs get tired the rhythm drops. Here you lie on your back. The speed comes from him, and you only receive it.

Because none of the effort is yours, you can often take a faster, firmer beat at the entrance than you could make yourself, and more than would feel good if the strokes went deep. This is a different experience from deep thrusting and from being on top, not a better one. Some women like to steer and prefer being on top; some like to be carried and prefer this. You can still meet him by tilting your hips, but you do not have to.

Pressure, rubbing, or both

There is more than one way to work the front wall in this position, and all of them are valid:

  • Rubbing: short, quick strokes that drag the head of the penis along the wall.
  • Pressure: he holds the head against the wall and moves in small pushes, without pulling back much.
  • Both: short strokes with a small press at the top of each one.

If you want a place to start, try the combination first, then try each on its own. Keep whichever feels best to you; it may be a different one next time. More on the three ways: Touching the front wall: pressure, rubbing, or both.

Front-wall contact does not feel the same for everyone. Some women feel strong pleasure, some feel mostly pressure or a sudden urge to pee (The urge to pee during sex), and some feel little at all. All of these are normal bodies. If the urge-to-pee feeling interests you, one way to explore it is in Sweeping the Tip of the Penis Across the Entrance Works Late in Sex, Not as Foreplay.

Changing the angle

A few simple changes tilt the angle so the stroke meets the front wall more squarely. Try them one at a time and keep only what works for you:

  • A pillow under your hips. Raising your hips a few centimeters tilts your pelvis, so the head of the penis catches the front wall more directly instead of gliding past it.
  • Your legs on his shoulders. This does the same job by rolling your pelvis up toward him. It asks more of your hips and hamstrings, so it suits some bodies and not others.
  • Your own tilt. Small shifts of your pelvis are often the most precise change of all, because you feel exactly where the contact lands. When a tilt feels right, tell him to hold it there.
  • A light press on your lower belly. His palm (or yours) resting just above the pubic bone adds a little pressure behind the front wall. Keep it light, a resting hand, not a lean. Some women feel it clearly, some barely.
  • Legs together. If he holds your thighs closed around him, the contact can feel tighter and more concentrated (more on squeezing: Squeezing Your Thighs Speeds the Climb, It Doesn't Turn Up the Touch).

The same dial works on him

Here is the catch. Every change above makes the contact firmer and squarer for you, and it does the same for him: more friction on the underside of the head of his penis, the most sensitive part. The pillow that gets you there faster also gets him there faster. In this position, angle is one dial with your pleasure on one side and his on the other, and it only turns both ways at once.

So this is not a gentle position for lasting a long time; it is a strong one for both of you. If you both want it to last, he can turn the dial down when he feels close: lighter, shallower, slower for a few strokes, then back up. Sitting up does help with that, for a different reason, explained in Lasting Longer Comes From Where Your Attention Goes, Not From Pushing Harder. If your partner uses a strap-on or holds a toy at this angle, the front-wall part works the same way, and this catch does not apply.

Two free hands

Sitting up also opens space. Lying flat, his chest is on yours and his arms hold him up. Kneeling, there is room between your bodies and his hands are free. So are yours.

For many women, touching the clitoris during penetration makes orgasm easier than penetration alone (Towne, 2019; more in Clitoral stimulation during penetration). Not everyone needs it, and some prefer one feeling at a time. If you want it, there are several ways:

  • One hand on the clitoris, his or yours, moving or simply pressing.
  • Both hands: for example one resting with steady pressure while the other moves.
  • One hand on the clitoris and one on a nipple at the same time (For Nipples, a Flick Often Does More Than a Squeeze).

Pressure that feels right one minute can be too much the next, especially as you get closer. Some women want the touch light and indirect, others firm. Say which, or move his hand where you want it. For other positions with room for a hand or a toy, see Choose a Position by Where the Pressure Lands and Whose Hands Are Free.

If you would rather keep both hands free, a flat vibrator made to stay in place during penetration can rest on your clitoris between your bodies:

When it does not land

  • A sharp pain deep inside usually means a stroke went too deep and reached the cervix. That is a clear "not there", not something to push through. He should shorten the stroke and lower the angle. Some women enjoy deep pressure once fully aroused (Deep pressure: when deep is right); this position is simply aimed at the front, not the back.
  • Soreness or pressure right from the start often means the body had not opened yet. Fast strokes before you are aroused tend to feel worse, not better. Start slower and let arousal come first (wet is not the same as ready).
  • Legs or hips aching means the angle has become too steep for tonight. Take your legs off his shoulders or lower the pillow.
  • His knees may need a folded blanket, or the edge of the bed with him kneeling on the floor.
  • The angle that worked last week does nothing tonight. Bodies change from night to night. Let your hips search for a new tilt instead of repeating the old one, or switch to something else entirely (Hands Can Do More as the Finish Than as the Warm-Up).

Pain that keeps coming back in any position is worth checking with a doctor: Toys and your health: when to check with a doctor.

You stay in charge

Even though he sets the speed, you set the limits. "Slower", "shallower", "stay there" and "stop" are all complete sentences, and a hand on his hip works just as well. When you say stop, he stops.

What to take from this

If you want strong, direct contact on your front wall without doing the work, ask your partner to kneel upright, keep the strokes short and aim slightly upward. Try pressure, rubbing and the mix, and keep what feels best. Use a pillow, your legs or your own tilt to change the angle, and remember that every change that helps you brings him closer too, so turn it down when he needs it. Use the free hands, or a flat toy, for your clitoris if you want both at once.
