Inside and Outside Usually Make It Last Longer, Not Faster

A couple lying on a picnic blanket

Touching the clitoris and filling the vagina at the same time does two different things, depending on what you compare it with. Compared with penetration alone, adding the clitoris makes orgasm come more easily for many women. Compared with the clitoris alone, adding something inside usually makes it slower in clinical experience, and many women describe it as fuller. So combining them is less a way to come faster than a way to make it last. This article explains that, and how to put the two together.

Adding the clitoris to penetration

Many women do not come from penetration alone. In studies of women's experience, a substantial share say they need clitoral stimulation during intercourse to come, and this is part of why women come less often than men in heterosexual sex. Adding it, with a hand, a partner's hand or a toy, helps many women more than penetration by itself (more: Clitoral stimulation during penetration).

Adding fullness to the clitoris

The other direction works differently. Touch on the clitoris alone can bring orgasm quickly, because one small, sensitive spot is taking all of it. With something inside the vagina, the feeling spreads out. The clitoral signal lands differently and no single point spikes. In clinical experience the result is usually slower, a timing effect more than a strength effect, and many women describe it as deeper or fuller rather than a quick peak. Research agrees that orgasm with a partner usually takes longer than alone, but it has not yet shown for certain that fullness is the reason.

Why "more at once" can feel like less

Because the two don't simply add up, starting both at full strength at the same moment can feel confusing or muted. For some women the outside feeling is sharp and quick and the inside one heavy and slow, and for a while they compete for attention before blending. If it feels like too much, one way to handle it is to lead with one, then add the other, or to alternate for a while.

Ways to combine them

These are options, not a sequence you have to follow:

  • Fingers inside, mouth or hand on the clitoris. Fingers can press the front wall exactly where it feels good (more: Touching the front wall: pressure, rubbing, or both).
  • A toy inside and one outside, for example a small wearable toy inside and a vibrator on the clitoris, which leaves your hands free.
  • One toy that does both, with a curved part inside and a part that rests on the clitoris.
  • During sex, a partner inside while you or they hold a toy on your clitoris.

A toy shaped for both at once is a simple way to try this without juggling two.

Adjusting

  • If the inside mutes the outside so much that the clitoris feels like nothing, try something smaller inside, or alternate instead of doing both at once.
  • If you usually squeeze your thighs to come, you may find it harder with something inside: the same squeeze can feel like more pressure against it, and some women end up squeezing less. Try squeezing less hard, or add the fullness later (more: Squeezing Your Thighs Speeds the Climb, It Doesn't Turn Up the Touch).
  • Give it time. This is a way to make things last, so it works better when there is no hurry, and with a toy whose battery will keep up.
  • Fast is fine too. If what you want tonight is a quick orgasm, the clitoris alone is a perfectly good way there.

Some women respond mostly to the outside and some mostly to the inside. That is normal; the combination is an option, not a requirement.

What to take away

Adding the clitoris to penetration makes orgasm easier for many women; adding fullness to the clitoris usually makes it slower, and many women describe it as fuller. Combine them to make things last, lead with one and add the other if both at once feels like too much, and keep the quick way for the nights you want it.
