Grinding on Top Reaches Your Clitoris Through Your Lips, So It Feels Full, Not Sharp

When you are on top and you press down and grind instead of lifting up and down, most of what touches him is your outer lips, not the tip of your clitoris. The pressure travels inward from your lips to the parts of the clitoris that lie underneath them. That indirect route is why the grind builds a wide, warm fullness rather than a sharp spark. This article explains where the contact really lands, how to set your body for it, why it needs your weight pressing in, and what to add if you also want the spark.

Where the contact lands

The usual description of grinding on top is "rubbing your clitoris on his pubic bone." In the clinical experience this article draws on, that is not quite what happens when you sit upright. The part of you pressed against the base of his penis and his pubic bone is mostly your outer lips (the labia majora, the full folds on either side). As you move, they are pressed flat and dragged forward and back. At the same time, his penis inside you pulls a little on the ring of your entrance with every movement.

So the grind works through two things at once: your lips being squeezed and dragged, and a steady tug at your opening. Neither of them is a finger or a tongue on the tip of the clitoris.

Why it still reaches your clitoris

The clitoris is much bigger than the tip you can see. It is one structure: the tip (glans), a body running back under the skin, two legs along the bones, and two bulbs of spongy tissue that lie under your lips on either side of the vaginal opening (O'Connell 2004; more: How the clitoris is built). When you are aroused, all of it fills with blood and swells.

That is why pressing on your lips is not "missing" the clitoris. Pressure and pulling on the lips and around the entrance can press on the bulbs and legs underneath, and can shift the hood over the tip. Imaging studies show these parts and the tissue around the entrance working together during arousal (Jannini 2014). The touch arrives, but it arrives through padding, spread out over a wide area. You feel it as a broad, pressing warmth through the whole front of you, not a bright point.

There is a second reason it feels broad. With him inside you, touch on the clitoris tends to register differently: slower, spread out, fuller. The two do not simply add up (more: Inside and Outside Usually Make It Last Longer, Not Faster).

Full, not sharp, is the character of this way of moving. It is not a weaker version of direct touch. The clitoris can respond to steady pressure with very little movement, and for many women that pressing kind of touch is a way of being touched in its own right.

How to set your body

This grind needs your weight going into him, not lifting off him.

  • Press down and forward. Let some of your weight settle onto him, through the front of your pelvis.
  • Tip your pelvis forward, so the front of your vulva, not your bottom, is what meets the base of him.
  • Let your knees go a little wider than feels natural. It opens your lips flat against him and gives you a steadier base.
  • Move in a slow forward circle, or a slow drag forward and back, keeping the pressure on the whole time. Think of pressing the heel of your hand slowly into a sore muscle: pressing and rolling, not tapping.

You still drive from your legs. Your knees and feet carry you and your upper body stays fairly tall, the same way you rock forward and back on top (more: rocking on top). The difference is the load: here you let weight press into him as you rock forward, instead of holding it up.

A picture some women find useful: your lips are a boat and your clitoris is the passenger. You are not poking at the passenger. You move the boat, and the passenger rides along.

How deep he is matters less here than in other ways of moving on top, because the grind works at the base of him and at your entrance. That also means his size matters little for it.

When it tends to work

Pressing and pulling on the lips is a firmer kind of touch. Many women like it more once they are already aroused and swollen, and find it too much, or simply flat, at the very start. If the grind does nothing for you early on, try it again later in sex before deciding it is not for you.

It also needs him firm. The tug at your entrance comes from a stiff shaft; if he softens, the pulling fades and the grind goes flat. If that keeps happening, it is worth looking at his erection before blaming your own body (more: When She Rides on Top, Your Job Is to Stay Hard and Keep Your Hips Still).

What he can do

His part is small, and small is what works. He can put his hands on your hips and give a slight push up into your press down, the two of you moving slowly in circles together. His push up into your weight coming down deepens the pressure without anyone thrusting hard. Fast, deep thrusting from underneath breaks the press you are building, so tell him if he needs to keep still. You can also press your hands on his chest or his forearms to steady yourself.

The grind and the swing: switch between them

There is another way of moving on top: taking him only halfway in and rocking so your entrance swings on the middle of his shaft (more: half in on top). That swing needs the opposite setting. Your weight lifts off him into your legs so your hips can swing freely. The grind needs your weight pressing in.

Pressing in and lifting off cannot happen in the same movement, so you do not run the two at once. You do one, and when your body asks for something else, you shift your weight and do the other. In the clinical experience this article draws on, the change itself often feels good: the sensation moves from one kind of fullness to another.

Neither one is the advanced version. Some bodies light up under the grind and feel little in the swing; some are the other way round; many enjoy both and choose by mood or by the night. Researchers describe arousal as a balance between what speeds it up and what brakes it, set differently in each person (Janssen 2023; Bancroft 2000). You find out which you like by trying each, not by deciding in advance. If you already rock or grind a little on top without thinking about it, the grind is a natural place to start. Keep whatever feels best to you.

Some women describe grinding on top as the only way they come during penetration. One woman whose clitoral tip is not very sensitive described still getting deep clitoral pleasure from grinding. Another said grinding only works for her after she has already come once from direct touch. All of these are normal.

If you want the spark as well

The grind trades sharpness for fullness. If what you want is the sharp, focused feeling of the tip being touched directly, add it rather than grinding harder:

  • Your own fingers on the tip while you move. Lifting your weight slightly makes room for your hand (more: touching the clitoris during penetration).
  • A small toy held on the tip, by you or by him. His hands are free when you are on top (more: positions with room for a toy).
  • A different position. When he sits up and you sit on his lap chest to chest, your clitoris can press straight onto him. That is a separate way of doing it, with its own mechanics.

If you combine the grind with direct touch and it feels muddled, try one, then the other, instead of both at full strength (more: Inside and Outside Usually Make It Last Longer, Not Faster).

Keeping it comfortable and safe

  • Keep the circle slow. Circling is a way to vary the rhythm, not a race. A fast, forceful grind or circle on a fully hard penis can bend it sharply. If he feels sudden pain, hears or feels a pop or crack, or his erection drops suddenly, stop at once; that needs urgent medical care (more: On Top, the Risky Moment Is Coming Back Down Off-Target).
  • Look after your lips. Held pressure and dragging can chafe. Plenty of lube helps the drag stay smooth (more: lube and silicone). If your lips or entrance sting, burn or feel sore, ease off or change what you are doing.
  • Pain means stop. Pressing your weight onto him should feel like pressure, not pain, for both of you. Pain, numbness, or soreness that lasts after you stop is your cue to stop, and to see a doctor if it does not settle.

What to take away

When you grind on top, you are mostly working your outer lips and the entrance, and the clitoris is reached through them. That is why it feels wide and full rather than sharp. To do it, press your weight down, tip your pelvis forward, open your knees a little and move in a slow circle or drag with the pressure held. It needs weight in, the half-in swing needs weight off, so switch between them rather than mixing them. If you want the spark too, add a finger or a small toy on the tip. Which way suits you is yours to find by trying.
